Swertia Chirata, indigenous to the Himalayas, is a bitter tasting plant commonly used in traditional medical systems of our country. It is valued for treating a variety of health problems. It grows in temperate regions from Kashmir to Bhutan. Traditionally, all parts of the plant including leaves, flowers, roots and stems are used; however, the root is mentioned to be the most powerful part.
Established benefits in traditional medicine include reducing fevers, joint pains, getting rid of intestinal worms, skin diseases, easing constipation, urinary discharges, ulcers, stomach ache, asthma, bronchitis and vaginal infections. It's also been used as a breath freshener and for reducing vomiting during pregnancy. Traditional Bhutanese medicine uses Sweartia Chirata for blood purification and to cure common cold, gout, diabetes and even malaria. Swertia Chirata is excellent for de-worming children, is cooling in nature, and easy to digest.
If you are not sure on how to use this herb, below is an easy way to prepare the herbal drink:
Directions: To make Swertia Chirata drink, take 3 to 4 sticks. Put it in a glass of water. After 10 to 12 minutes take the Sweartia Chirata out and discard the water. This will cleanse the twigs and remove the dirt or anything else if present. Now take a clean glass and put those washed twigs in it, fill the glass with drinking water and keep it overnight. In the morning the water will turn pale yellow. Take it while in empty stomach.
